It's my blogaversary!!! (for real this time)

Exactly one year ago today, I created StockingsAddict.

What started as a way for me to talk about stockings to my heart's content (mostly so I wouldn't drive my friends crazy) has since morphed into a incredible journey where I've not only learned more about hosiery and lingerie than I ever thought possible, but also made some new friends to boot!

Most of all, I'd like to thank you, the readers. Without your support, in all its varying forms, I probably would have given this blog up months ago. You have no idea how much it means to me that you all take the time to read what I have to say. It's one of the highest compliments anyone could give.

Okay, I'll stop gushing now. But seriously, y'all are awesome. :-)

the look for less, pt. 6--Bebaroque

Much like my love for leopard print, I've made no secret of the fact that I also enjoy a good tattoo print. Be it the overtly retro stylings of Sailor Jerry or the more ethereal, artistic approach taken by Bebaroque, I really, really dig tattoos.

But you know and I know that good lingerie doesn't come cheap, and as much I'd like to buy every single pair of Bebaroque tights in every single color, my itty bitty income simply won't allow it.

Fortunately, Jonathon Aston read my mind and came out with a budget version of the tattooed look. Part of this season's limited edition fashion range, the Jonathon Aston tights have a nude background with blue and black butterflies flittering from thigh to ankle. Available from Asos or StockingsHQ for £9.75 or £8.50 ($13.94 or $12.16 USD), respectively, I believe these pantyhose are a great buy.

Edit:
The tights just sold out on Asos.com, so now StockingsHQ is the only place to buy them!

The look for way, way less--Rodarte leggings

It seems I can't open a fashion magazine without running into Rodarte's uber-chic diamond cutout leggings. However, at $920.00/pair I will (for obvious reasons) never, ever know how they feel on my legs.

While the look isn't exactly for me, I understand someone may want to try it. Stockingirl posted a link to a do-it-yourself version of the tights. Blogger Six Six Six (pictured right) also has a guide on how to make your very own set of diamond cut leggings, but she warns that the entire process is a "massive pain in the ass."

Now I've never been good with craft projects. So if you're like me, and want a similar look but without the massive investment of time or money, you may want to try Asos' large oval net tights. They're not diamond cut outs, but you do get the trend of large holes and a chunky pattern. Plus, at only £5.00/pair you won't have to feel bad about cutting the feet off to make your own leggings. Or throwing them away once the season's over, for that matter.

well this is just too good to keep to myself...

In the same way Falke helped me to understand the sensuous potential of a pair of stockings, Kiss Me Deadly showed me just how glamorous a retro corselette or garter belt could be.

I own several of KMD's sold out collections, including the first editions of both the Vargas girdle dress and the Sirena bra set. For months now, I've been lusting after the new Sirena collection in all black, but couldn't justify the expense. Now, I no longer have that excuse.

Madscientistcat, whose e-bay store is SuspendersandStockings, sells excess stock from Kiss Me Deadly at steep discount. However, these aren't last season's castoffs, oh no. Not only are pieces from the black Sirena set for sale, she also has the most recent version of the Vargas girdle dress (red and black) listed, plus a veritable cornucopia of garter belts in multiple colors.

My readers with vintage figures will be happy to know that most of the bras and corselettes listed are for curvy women, with sizes ranging from 38C to 38DD and beyond. Best of all, shipping to the U.S. is a flat rate of £5, no matter how many items you buy.

I don't know about you, but it feels like Christmas all over again!

P.S. I just checked my trusty standby, La Magia, and she also has the red and black Vargas girdle dress on sale along with the green and black Alouette collection. I love having options.

innuendo?

Hmm. Am I the only one who finds this panty a little...suggestive?

On sale at Kiki de Montparnasse.

A sneak preview of the next article...

Shhhh!!! It's a secret! ;-)

Extra! Extra!

It's time for news, and boy, do I have lots of it!

1) Puimond is once again selling a handful of his extraordinary corsets on e-bay. Here's your chance to pick one up for a fraction of the regular price.

2) StockinGirl is having a 33% off sale on all their 100% nylon, RHT, colored stockings. As much as I disagree with some of Stockingirl's "creative renaming" practices, these stockings are undeniably awesome. Enter "CSRHT" into the search bar to find all eligible items.

3) Thanks to the lovely Stocking Vixen, I'm now a featured fashion blogger on Alltop. Please go over there and show those good people they didn't make a mistake by clicking on my link.

4) Don't forget to follow me on Twitter! I'm posting most of my sale updates (such as the spectacular extra 40% off sale Nancy Meyer had over the weekend) there and reserving my blog for more substantive articles.

5) There is no five. Edit: We do have a five! Figleaves hosiery is still buy one, get one free. This sale is perfect if you need to stock up on basics like sheer pantyhose or fishnet thigh highs.

I think I'm in love...

Nick (a.k.a. Mr. Stocking) has just directed me to a new source for satisfying my endless love affair with hosiery--Kay Marel.

Kay Marel specializes in vintage stockings, from the 1950's. Their nylons have been featured in the world famous magazine, Leg Show, and they also sell other retro inspired fashions such as longline bras and stiletto heels.

Almost all of their stockings are fully fashioned with backseams and fancy heels. Best of all, their prices are jaw-droppingly reasonable. $29.50 for authentic, vintage, limited edition nylons? That's half the price of some retro reproductions I've seen.

Needless to say, I think I'm making a purchase from Kay Marel very, very soon. I've put a few of my favorite styles below...

Shamelessly stolen from Stocking Vixen...

My blogging friend Stocking Vixen always makes great posts, but she's really outdone herself this time.

Giving me a link to dozens of photographs of women in ridiculously sexy stockings?

How am I going to get any work done today?

working girl

After three months of intense job-searching, I've finally been hired.

The only catch? The job is in Seattle, and I live in Atlanta.

My first day of work is only a few weeks away, so I have lots to do.

I'm going to try to keep the blog updated regularly, but if my posts become a little less frequent, now you know why. :-)

The smaller they are...

FairyGothMother just released photos of their new season's collection online. As usual, they offer a rich selection of extravagant, elaborate designs which combine luxurious European styling with a refined British sensibility. Unfortunately, considering the state of the global economy, it's a bit difficult to justify spending several hundred pounds on an outfit you may only wear once or twice.

Therefore, the good folks at FairyGothMother's in-house brand, Lulu and Lush, came up with a pleasant budget alternative--the corset belt. Combining the waist cinching capability of a corset with the versatility of a belt, the corset belt is a marvelous addition to their collection, and at £85 (approximately $123.31 USD), it's affordable even if you live across the Atlantic.

Those looking for a bit more coverage or cinching power may want to try What Katie Did's new "baby" underbust corset. At 7.5" long, this corset extends from the bottom of the rib cage to the top of the hips, but still retains WKD's curve-friendly goring. La Magia sells the baby underbust for £120, but with the 15% discount code readers of this blog have (PINK123), it comes out to only £102 (approximately $148.00).

Keep looking for more corset-related tidbits as we get closer to this year's Corset Week.

What's Your Lingerie Personality?

Knickers Blog is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the better lingerie blogs out there. They're my go-to source for info on the best sales, lingerie designers, and practical advice (how do you wear nipple tassles?).

In my opinion, one of their best articles is "Virgin to Vixen: Our Seven Lingerie Personalities." It's not only a guide to discovering what you like, it's also a mini-directory to lingerie designers you may never have heard of. Furthermore, every holiday season the ladies at Knickers Blog write a guide specific to your lingerie personality, making it easy to drop hints to your significant other about what you want.

The seven personalities are virgin, cozy cutie, olympian, sophisticate, romantic, flirt, and vixen. To find out which you are, you're going to want to read the article. In case you're curious, I'm a vixen. Feel free to let me know what your results show. :-)

It's my Blogaversary!

Well, almost anyway...

In celebration of both my one year blogging anniversary and my upcoming seminar on vintage and retro lingerie at this year's Frolicon, Cameo Intimates is giving 20% off anything until June 1, 2009. Simply enter the code Frolicon. The discount applies not only to their handcrafted lingerie, but also to any custom projects or vintage alteration services.

I own this bra, these panties, and this girdle from them. I'm in love with every piece, but now I'm thinking it's time to expand my collection. Maybe I'll start with the foxy little polka dot bra and panty to the right. Oh, so many choices...

Models I love--KumiMonster

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting internationally renowned and respected fetish model, KumiMonster. Not only is she a genuinely nice person, she has a wardrobe I would kill for (I'm exaggerating only slightly ...). Since today is her birthday, I thought I'd do a bit of a "Happy Birthday" post here on my blog. The following is taken directly from the bio on her website.

"I'm half Korean from my mother's side and my father's family hails from Ireland. Latex is what I can appreciate the most but that doesn't mean I don't have a decent amount of leather in my wardrobe or PVC for that matter. After all, those fabrics are a bit more sturdier than latex for particular scenes. ; ) "

"The other things I enjoy are stockings. I love taking new ones out of the package knowing that the perfect things are about to lose the pristine quality that all new things have. I love the feel of them sliding on and the placement of the heel and back seam. Of course, they're just as much fun to take off."

Tell me...how could I not think she's awesome?

If you've ever wondered what I look like...

Then you're going to want to click over to my Twitter. My friend, Photognome, and I did a lingerie photoshoot last night and we both agree the image we've linked to is one of the best of the whole set.

For anyone wondering, the fishnets come from Oroblu, and are available here. And why yes, they do feel as good as they look!

Harlequin! (pt. 2)

So those crazy, diamond-printed, fuschia tights I was drooling over back in August?

Well, I bought 'em. ;-)

After all, the best way to avoid temptation is to give in to it.

Here's how they look on yours truly...

Show us your Twitter!

As part of my mission to spread the gospel of nylon seduction everywhere, I've started a Twitter account.

With a 140 character limit, you won't find the detailed articles I post here. What you will find, however, is all the content I think about during the day that never makes it onto my blog. Everything from what kind of lingerie I'm wearing to who's having a last-minute sale. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

latex lashes?

Has anyone seen the ad campaign for Maybelline's new Lash Stiletto mascara?

I know the tagline is "the only mascara that does for lashes what stilettos do for legs," but I'm a hell of a lot more interested in a mascara that does for lashes what a pair of shiny, latex stockings do for legs.

Mmmmm...

where do we go from here?

Now that the first event of the year is over, I've been thinking about what's next. With Spring just around the corner, I want to bring a bit "freshness" to the blog. Here is a list of things I'm thinking of implementing in the next few weeks:

--cleaning up labels so you can more easily find the posts you want

--reviving the "Models I Love" feature

--more reviews of luxury items

--an article or three on the vintage items I own, maybe even a Vanity Fair special

--more reviews of Etsy items

--more photos of me modeling my pretties

--a giveaway to celebrate my 1 year blogging anniversary!

As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome. For those of you local to Atlanta...next month, I'm giving a seminar on vintage and retro lingerie at Frolicon. So, if you happen to be in the area, stop by and say hello.

Have a great weekend!

wrapping things up

To all my readers and fellow bloggers, thanks so much for supporting Fishnet Stockings Week. :-)

After several days of reviews, I thought I'd "bring the sexy back" by posting a few photos of fishnet stockings I've run across in the past week or so.

Enjoy!

a final review

Right now, I'm sitting in a coffeeshop, sipping on a vanilla latte, and wearing the last pair of tights I'm reviewing for the first ever Fishnet Stockings Week. Tomorrow will likely be just a review of what we've done so far, and by "review," I mean lots of gratuitous fishnet photos.

After discussing a micronet and a regular fishnet, the next logical step seemed to be a fence net, and since I've reviewed two luxury brands and one budget brand, it seemed equally logical that my next review should be a budget brand.

So today I'm wearing the Wearing Jonathan Aston Stringer nets layered over my purple Aristoc Wet Look tights. I have to say, I love this combination. Stringer nets on their own are a bit much for me. There's a lot of skin, very little nylon, and though there's nothing wrong with that look, it's just not for me. While I wore the fishnets layered over opaque, colored tights, I also think they'd look stunning over (under?) sheer, black tights.

With so little to hold on to, I had surprising difficulty getting these on. In addition, these tights tore the very first time I wore them. I'm not sure if that's because fence nets are naturally delicate or if it's because these were a budget brand, but I don't like things which tear that quickly. The Jonathon Aston Stringer nets are sheer to waist, with light reinforcing at the toe (mostly a denser weave at the big toe) and no cotton gusset.

While I bought these on Figleaves Clearance a few months ago for just a couple of dollars, the only retailers selling them now are MyTights and Stockings Direct for $15.95 and $11.82 a pair, respectively. The pair I own is one size fits all (which may explain my difficulty putting them on), but they are available in sizes S, M, L from either site and in the colors black and chocolate from Stockings Direct and black and scarlet from MyTights.

I have to be honest with you all and say that I wouldn't spend anything over $10.00 for these tights. While they did look nice, the simple fact is they tore, badly, on the very first wearing. Budget brand or no, that's simply unacceptable.

Grrrrr, Baby

It's no secret that I like leopard print. What started off as a passing fancy for a certain pin-up panty has since developed into a full blown fixation. In recent months, I've acquired leopard print girdles, leopard print bras, leopard print swimuits, and now...leopard print stockings.

Today, I'm reviewing the Betsey Johnson Fishnet Tights. If they look familiar, it's because I've already written about them in one of my lust features. A seasonal offering from a couple of winters back, the only retailer still selling these is Sock Dreams.

The fabric content is 90% nylon and 10% spandex. These tights are sheer to waist, and do not have a cotton gusset. The waistband is leopard printed elastic. Available in three colors (camel, cobalt, and blue) and two sizes (S/M and M/L), these tights fit maximum measurements of 6'0" and 165 lbs. Betsey Johnson is a designer label, and the price tag reflects this with a suggested retail price of $40.00.

As a child of the 80's, I was weaned on Jem and the Holograms and Rockstar Barbie. So the post-punk glamour of neon + fishnet+ leopard print appeals to me on a level I can't quite explain. It's fun and funky, and, when you get right down to it, lingerie is supposed to be about having a good time.

Unfortunately, we started off on the wrong foot with the packaging. If any corporate bigwigs are reading this please, for the love of whatever you hold sacred, don't use adhesive on the packaging of your hosiery. Not only does it cling to the fibers (making me afraid of tearing my nylons before I even put them on), it also takes off the dye and stretches the threads out of shape. In short, three very bad things happen (or are likely to happen) before I've even worn my stockings for the first time.

As far as fit, these tights are comfortable though not quite so much as the other high end tights I reviewed yesterday by Falke. The fishnet is a regular size. I bought these in the camel color, and I have to say I think the cobalt or hot pink might work better on skin tones like mine. As you can see in the picture, there are some places where the pattern just kind of fades away.

While I like these tights quite a bit, I'm not convinced they're worth the price tag. They're cute. They're comfortable. They're couture. But I'm not blown away. Those looking for a budget alternative might want to check out Celeste Stein, which also offers animal print fishnets.

The Fishnet Friday Review

My stockings of choice for the first ever Fishnet Friday were by the oft-mentioned (in this blog anyway) luxury brand, Falke. In case you don't feel like slogging through a years worth of entries, Falke holds a very special place in my nylon obsessed heart. Their Lunelle thigh highs (you know, the ones with the peacock feather welts) were my very first post ever. In fact, you could credit Falke with sparking the radical shift in consciousness that led to the creation of this blog. Quite suddenly, I realized stockings could be more than an accessory...so much more.

First though, a few stats. The Falke fishnets are composed of 75% polyamide and 25% elastane. They have the all important cotton gusset, and are sheer to waist which, as you know, means there is no reinforcing anywhere on the stockings. The waistband is simple elastic with the Falke label imprint. Regarding the fishnet pattern, it's a bit smaller than usual, but not small enough to qualify as a micronet. If you're looking for an understated but still noticeable fishnet, I think these are the perfect size.

As far as how they feel, well...it's like wearing nothing at all on your legs. Literally five minutes after I put these on, I completely forgot about them. I didn't have the same issues with banding as I had with the Aristoc tights. They're also very durable, surviving both my increasingly rough fingers (I've begun martial arts training again), and an evening of a curious baby sticking his fingers inside the holes.

However, Falke is a luxury brand, and that means the biggest problem is the price. At $32 from mytights.com, $78.00 for a two pack at net-a-porter.com, or $39.00 from shopbop.com (nude only), these'll set you back a pretty penny. If you have the money, they're great, but I just can't recommend them in good conscience...especially when so many other budget brands (Figleaves, Jonathon Aston, and Aristoc just to name a few) are making great quality fishnets too.

back on schedule

Today, I'm reviewing the Aristoc mini fishnet tights. Made by one of the United Kingdom's leading hosiery brands, the mini fishnet tights are available in the colors black and nude and in the sizes S/M and M/L, fitting a maximum height of 5'10" and maximum hip measurement of 48," according to the size chart.

The fabric content is 72% Nylon, 26% Elastane, and 2% Cotton. These tights are sheer to waist, which means they're all fishnet from top to bottom. With no bells and whistles, the only "extras" these tights have are a cotton gusset and a plain black elastic waistband. There is no reinforcing at the foot; however, the fishnet is fine enough to prevent your toes from poking through.

While you won't exactly forget you're wearing these tights, they are extremely comfortable. I wore the mini-fishnets on two separate occasions for about eight hours each time, and only towards the end did I begin experiencing "leg fatigue" (you know...that prickly feeling when your skin is telling you it needs to rest). Even then, these tights didn't leave any of the uncomfortable indentations on my legs that other budget tights have. The size of the net itself is between a regular fishnet and a micronet, not really falling into either category.

The fit is true to size with lots of give. Honestly, I think someone up to six feet tall could wear these. The only significant concern I have is how all that elasticity contributes to "banding." What I mean by banding are areas where the fishnet isn't evenly distributed and makes "bands" of what appear to be solid color.

That said, when you factor in versatility, comfort, and cost (only $10.25 on mytights.com or $6.83 at stockingshq.com) these fishnets are definitely a must buy. A+.

Apologies

Hi everyone,

I went to the "early nerd special" of Watchmen last night (i.e. the 12 a.m. showing) and I'm afraid it's completely thrown me off schedule.

I have my next post for Fishnet Stockings Week all queued up and I'll post it as soon as I get back from a job interview Friday afternoon.

Until then, I want to share a couple of my favorite images from the movie with you. I love it when my two passions--comics and lingerie--come together. ;-)

Fishnets 101

I did a bit of research before writing this article, and let me start off by saying that I am tired of people assuming that fishnets are automatically trashy, or that they're only suitable for sex workers, or that "good" girls (whatever the hell that means) don't wear them.

We're living in the 21st century. Not only should folks be past that kind of morally blind dichotomy, the honest to goodness truth is no single item of clothing can be classy or slutty on its own merits. It's all about who wears it, and what their intentions are while wearing it. Point blank...there is no right or wrong way to wear fishnet stockings.

Now that I've gotten all that off my chest, let's move on to the good stuff. :-)

Fishnets are, at their simplest, mesh nylons. Instead of the closely woven knit of regular stockings, fishnets consist of an open weave fabric with a large number of closely spaced holes. These holes are often, though not always, diamond shaped.

The size of the nets themselves are on a continuum. At one end, you have micronet (sometimes called tulle) tights and stockings. In the middle, we have what we'll call "regular" fishnets, using a diamond pattern in which each space is approximately 1/16" wide. At the other end, there are stringer nets (also called fencenets or whale nets) which consist of extra large diamonds. Think lots of skin, very little nylon. A fourth pattern, not quite as popular as the other three, is the industrial net which comes between regular fishnets and fence nets in size.

While the most popular fishnet colors are black and nude, they are available with as many potential variations as knit stockings ranging from multiple colors to backseams to welts and so on. As with anything else, quality matters. Better quality fishnets (which often, though not always) have a higher price equal more durable stockings which will hold their shape after multiple wearings.

Why are fishnets so enduringly popular? I think it's because the net pattern not only accentuates curves, it also breaks up the mass of the leg making it appear more shapely and defined but without adding bulk. The net also provides a visual distraction, glossing over imperfections...which is probably why dancers--from broadway to burlesque--favor them.

So when is it appropriate to wear fishnets? As with garter belts, first decide on your intentions. Are you looking to "tart it up" for a night of clubbing, bar hopping, and partying? Do you want to add just a bit of an edge to your office wear? Are you going for a retro pin-up look? Only once you've decided why you're wearing the fishnets will you be able to determine the best fishnets for you.

For example, many workplaces want to appear conservative. So, for that setting, micronets might be more appropriate as they have the appearance of textured tights with a slight sheen from a distance. Darker or more muted colors would likely be suitable for a business setting as well, though that doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to basic black. Slate gray or navy blue fishnets could strike the right balance of modesty and verve.

For a night on the town, however, you could try layering black fishnets over opaque tights (my preference, especially for industrial and whale nets). Some of my punk, goth, and fetish friends like to layer different colored fishnets on top of each other, perhaps a green fishnet over a yellow one or a red net over a black one. For the more adventurous among us, Celeste Stein makes fishnets with a startling array of patterns.

I'm not going to give you any hard and fast rules. I'm just going to say that whatever look you have, make sure it's deliberate. If you're trying to look sedate and demure, then whale nets are likely not for you. If you're trying to make your legs "pop," then you may want something more pronounced than a tulle. The same is true with whether or not torn fishnets are appropriate. If your look is grungy and devil-may-care, then go for it, but if you're trying to appear polished and tailored, you may want to throw the torn nets away.

A few more notes...if you're worried about "squidge,"I'd recommend fishnet stockings paired with a girdle or waist cincher rather than control top fishnets. In addition, even though fishnets are really just stockings with holes in them and therefore have lots of give, you want to be sure to buy your proper size. Ill fitting stockings never flattered anyone.

Fishnets never go out of style; they're a classic metaphor for sexiness. To me, fishnets are the epitome of the tease, both revealing and concealing. They're interactive, textural, and often titillating to both the wearer and the observer.

Oh, I almost forgot! This Friday is Fishnet Friday. Soooo...wear your fishnets! I'd love it if you all commented and told me what kind you were wearing. :-)

What is "Fishnet Stockings Week?"

Unlike a lot of the stuff I write about here, I'm almost certain most of you have seen someone in fishnets before. Fishnet stockings are a staple piece in almost every woman's wardrobe, lingerie fetishist or no. Unlike other fetish related items (say latex or corsets), fishnets make a regular appearance in mainstream media, from comics to movies to literature. My nickname for them is "instant sexy" because they're the easiest way to add sass and spark to even the most mundane outfit.

However, despite their ubiquitousness, one has to ask, what makes a good fishnet stocking? Is the pair I bought for $4 from Jonathan Aston as good as the pair that cost $40 from Wolford? To answer that question, I decided to start Fishnet Stockings Week which happens roughly six months before (or after, depending on your perspective) Corset Week. Because this is my first time doing this particular event, I want to give a bit of a preview...especially if you're just joining my blog.

Fishnet Stockings Week starts March 4th and continues through March 11th. We'll start with a brief, technical overview of what defines the fishnet and talk about some basic differences in type and style of net. Immediately afterwards, I'm going to start posting reviews. Expect to see thorough discussions of fishnet hose from brands as diverse as Wolford, Falke, Betsey Johnson, Jonathan Aston, Aristoc, and Secrets in Lace. The goal for me is to have you, my readers, not only become more acquainted with fishnet stockings in general but also to have a better idea of which fishnets would be best for you.

An entire week devoted to fishnet stockings might be a bit excessive for some people, but they don't call me an addict for nothing. See you all again on March 4th!
